Go Green Week, a five-day programme of inspiring free events, talks, activities and exhibitions open to the public and celebrating Aston University's commitment to sustainability, is to take place between Monday 6 and Friday 10 February around it’s Birmingham city centre campus.

Building on the success of last year’s Go Green Week, Aston University’s Environment and Sustainability Team have organised the third annual week of free events to demonstrate sustainability and carbon reduction across their city centre campus, as part of the nationwide Go Green week run by People and Planet.

Highlights of Go Green Week at Aston University include an Eco-Marketplace offering greener living advice from organisations such as Friends of Earth, Greenpeace and the Digbeth-based business walkit.com, a screening of the award-winning deforestation film ‘Green’, a second-hand bicycle sale managed by Birmingham social enterprise Cycle Chain; a discussion on faith and climate change organised by Aston University Chaplaincy; a programme of sustainability themed lectures from academic staff; and an inspiring talk from the comedian turned environmental activist Robert Newman.

All events are free of charge and open to the general public.

Aston University Vice-Chancellor Professor Julia King, who is the UK’s Low Carbon Business Ambassador and a member of the Government's Committee on Climate Change, said ”We hope that our diverse programme of events and our convenient campus location in central Birmingham will help to make this year’s Go Green Week our most successful yet, attracting visitors from the wider community and local businesses as well as increasing awareness of sustainability issues amongst the University’s staff and students.”

Aston University ranked within the top 10 of People and Planet’s award winning Green League for the past two years. As a recognised leader in the field of sustainability, Aston University already has a number of technologies on campus, such as a Combined Heat and Power plant, a wind turbine and green roof on the recently built student residences, and an electric car and charging points, as well as ambitious targets to further reduce carbon emissions by 48% by 2020.

Past Go Green Week events at Aston University have included a World Food Market, a fuel efficient driving simulator and live webcam footage of Kestrels nesting within the main building on campus.

Aston University Environment and Sustainability Assistant Kathy Hopkin said, “Following on from the success of Go Green Weeks 2010 and 2011, we've put together the most varied programme of events yet, designed to appeal to students and staff alike as well as reaching out to the wider community. Visitors can receive advice on reducing energy use and costs in the home, explore alternative travel options or simply learn more about environmental issues.”

The Oasis Radio

On Monday 16th January, students from Birmingham City University are
launching The Oasis Radio, the official radio station for the legendary
Oasis Market - Birmingham's alternative lifestyle centre since 1971.

The station will run until January 27th, broadcasting from Birmingham City
University and being played out inside the market as well as online at
theoasisradio.net. The station's music has been selected to reflect the
Market's diverse range of store.

Everything from rock, dance and urban will have their place on The Oasis
Radio. The flagship shows, The Alternative Breakfast and Oasis Afternoons,
will be live every week day, playing the best in against the curve music,
as well as giving away prizes and providing up to the minute entertainment
news and opinions.

If that wasn't enough, during the day there will be three different shows,
tailor made to reflect some aspect of the Market. On a new theme every
hour, the shows can range from specific genres of music, to ones dedicated
to certain stores in the Market itself.

The Oasis Radio is keeping things fresh by having a constantly revolving
line up of presenters, so there will be something you like sooner rather
than later. On top of that, they will have specialist shows between 7-9pm
weekday evenings exclusively for their online listeners at
theoasisradio.net, getting you ready for your nights out!

A lot of hard work and planning has gone into making this a station that
really speaks to fans of the iconic market, making sure it covers its
diversity in full. No stone has been left unturned in their effort to make
a radio station worthy of the Oasis name.

The Oasis Radio is a station that marches to the beat of its own drum, and
they hope you’re along for the ride! Get in touch, they would love to hear
from you:

Local dachshunds sought for playful performance at Fierce Festival 2012

Do you know someone who owns a dachshund? It’s probably been pestering you all for a while, asking when it will get its big break. It’s grown tired of all the regular dog stuff. Going to the shops, enduring the seemingly endless ‘sausage’ remarks. You owe it a shot at the big time. Its chance has arrived.

Fierce Festival, Birmingham’s premier festival of live art, performance and public intervention returns from 29 March to 8 April 2012. The festival is currently recruiting sixty dachshunds from the West Midlands to participate in Bennett Miller’s ‘Dachshund U.N.’, a piece of live art to be performed in a central location in Birmingham during the festival.

Soho House at Half Term

Hello,

Please could you include info on things going on at Soho House over the half term?

Come along to Soho House over the half term holidays (25th - 30th Oct) and explore the spooky cellars below the house. This year you can find out those spine tingling things that kept the Georgians awake at night... Highwaymen, headless ladies and the sinister swish of the guillotine!... As well as this there are creepy crafts to keep the kids entertained on Tues/Weds/Thurs, and Horror Effects face painting on Friday... Remember the last day of our open season this year is 30th October, so come along to see you before then!

Thanks very much,

Rachel

Play School

Hi Jon,
Please could you post the below info on your blog so we can get lots
of Brummie's involved an playing!
Ta,
Lucy Nicholls

This summer I co-founded the West Midlands art collective Play More
and we are having our first (of what we hope to be many) event in
November and I would really love to get lots of artists involved. I
see the Play More collective and this event Play School, as having a
very collaborative ethos and approach and we're keen to build
relationships with other artists, gamers and performers within the
West Midlands.
I've attached the flyer for the event, Facebook links and a copy of
the artists call-out that we are putting on arts jobs. If you have any
ideas for a quirky little game or random task you would like to run or
if you don't mind helping out on the day, all contributions will be
most welcome and rewarded with a pint.
Anything from running a 3-legged race, to helping people make making
music instruments or comedy mustaches - all ideas, however daft, are
welcome!
Please get in touch if you'd like more info and forward to anyone you
think might interested.
Cheers,
Lucy x

OxjamBrum 2011 Preview

Oxjam_takeover_2011_poster_web

OxjamBrum is back for a third year taking over some of the city’s best
independent music venues.  On Saturday 15th October Birmingham will
play host to Oxfam’s national music festival by showcasing over 25 of
the region’s most exciting emerging bands and artists.  Be a part of
an amazing day by exchanging an advance £6 ticket for a festival
wristband.

OxjamBrum are extremely proud to announce ska funksters 360 as this
year’s headliner, fresh from sets at Glastonbury and Shambala.  The
Young Runaways have got right into the Oxjam spirit by planning not
one but two sets during the day, including an EP launch at The
Yardbird.  Their headline set at OxjamBrum’s sold out barge gig was
something to behold!

The Flapper will host an early evening set of singer-songwriters
finishing with the beautiful tones of Vijay Kishore.  But don’t be
late or you’ll miss out, live music upstairs at The Flapper from
5-8pm.  Then it will get all loud and sweaty downstairs in the gig
room with God Damn and Romans – earplugs at the ready.

Over at The Sunflower Lounge OxjamBrum have persuaded the city’s best
indie pop and post punk bands to cram themselves into the downstairs
room for sets that will be intimate and perhaps never again repeated!
Headlined by the The Carpels, who are unquestionably at the forefront
of the city’s new music scene.  Taking influence from punk, dub step,
electronica and indie they are the sound of Birmingham.  And it never
sounded so good.  Recently signed to One Beat Records this is one not
to miss.

And if that wasn’t enough this year OxjamBrum have planned quite an
afterparty.  As the old Academy/ Hummingbird re-opens its doors most
of Birmingham are gagging to have a little look-see inside.  To tempt
you to carry on the party Oxjam are hosting one final late night band,
The Bluebeat Arkestra, and have local lad Josh Mooney from Tantrums
spinning tunes until the small hours.  Got a festival wristband?  Then
you are guaranteed entry.  If not just £3 will get you access to the
new Birmingham Ballroom.

Advance tickets £6 – www.oxjambrum.org.uk

‘BUILD THE ALTERNATIVE, BROADEN THE RESISTANCE’

(BIRMINGHAM AGAINST the CUTS/ RIGHT to WORK joint PUBLIC MEETING)

Date: Thursday, 8th September 2011

Time: 7.00 p.m.

Venue: Birmingham and Midland Institute (Lytlleton Lecture Theatre)

            Margaret Street, Birmingham [B3 3BS]

Event: Public Meeting

Speakers:

Jack Dromey MP (Birmingham, Erdington)
Bob Crow, General Secretary RMT union
Jody McIntyre, journalist and political activist
Paul Brandon, Right to Work
(more speakers to be confirmed)
Chair: Caroline Johnson, Birmingham Unison / Birmingham Against the Cuts

This meeting is being held to continue to raise the debate of the
unfair cuts to jobs, services and pensions being suffered by the most
vulnerable in society, and to raise awareness of the protest
demonstration to be held on Sunday, 18th September, in Birmingham
against the Liberal Democratic conference being held in the city.

#                            #                           MORE
               #                                 #

Notes for editors:

1.      Birmingham Against the Cuts is an umbrella organisation made
up of many concerned about the cuts and include representatives of
Birmingham Trade Union Council, Birmingham People’s Charter,
Birmingham Right to Work, Save Our Services, NSSN West Midlands, many
trade unions, including: Unison; PCS; GMB; NUT; UCU; Unison; Unite;
RMT and CWU, as well as individuals and community groups.

2.      Details of Speakers:

Jack Dromey is the Labour MP for Birmingham Erdington. He has been
outspoken against the cuts, and has supported many events locally,
including the Justice for All march, and gave an excellent speech at
the BAtC public meeting held at the Council House on 26th May.

Bob Crow is the outspoken leader of the RMT union, who regularly takes
industrial action over health and safety issues, wrongful dismissals
or in defence of their pay and conditions. Bob is a union leader who
is not afraid to ballot his members for strike when it is needed, and
is well respected by them in return. It will be great to have him talk
here, in the light of potential upcoming strike action by public
sector workers in the autumn.

Jody McIntyre is a journalist and political activist who was dragged
out of his wheelchair during the student demonstration on the 9th
December. Ever passionate and always interesting, it will be a
pleasure to welcome Jody to our city.

Paul Brandon is the chair of the Right to Work coalition, who have
called this meeting jointly with Birmingham Against the Cuts. Right to
Work were instrumental in calling a demonstration at the Liberal
Democrat conference, which was quickly backed by all the local
anti-cuts groups working in the West Midlands and by the Regional TUC,
before being adopted by national TUC.

Chaired by Caroline Johnson, Chair of Birmingham Against the Cuts and
joint branch-secretary of Birmingham Unison, whose council workers
were on strike, along with other public sector workers, on 30th June

First ever West Midlands Human Rights Film Festival launches in Birmingham on 6 September 2011

First ever West Midlands Human Rights Film Festival

launches in Birmingham next month

6 September – 4 October 2011

The national-award-winning Birmingham International Film Society
(BIFS) is pleased to announce it will be hosting the first ever West
Midlands Human Rights Film Festival, next month.

‘There are so many films coming out at the moment that raise a variety
of human rights issues, we thought the best way to present them would
be in a Festival,' said film programmer, Max Simpson, one of the four
local film enthusiasts who founded BIFS in 2008.

'We hope the Festival will help promote awareness of human rights in
the West Midlands and encourage debate.'

The Festival will be launched on Tuesday 6 September at 6.30pm at the
Birmingham Library Theatre, with a reception and opening address from
special guest speaker, Simon Davies, Director of Privacy
International.

The reception will be followed by an exclusive preview screening of
the acclaimed Iranian film The Green Wave (12A) at 7.30pm at the
Birmingham Library Theatre.

Professor A.C. Grayling, Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College,
London, author, philosopher, and renowned supporter of Human Rights,
has voiced his support for BIFS's West Midlands Human Rights
initiative: 'One of the most impactful ways to educate people about
human rights is through film, and the West Midlands Human Rights Film
Festival performs a huge service in this respect. Few people will be
unchanged by what the Festival puts before their eyes.'

The Festival programme covers a range of issues and Articles relating
to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The majority of
screenings are Birmingham Premieres, and will be complete with guest
speakers, including directors, academics, and representatives of
issue-based groups.

Other venues that are showing films in partnership with the Festival
include the Midlands Arts Centre (mac), Vivid, the Light House in
Wolverhampton and Birmingham Library Theatre.

The Festival is funded by Screen WM and the British Film Institute,
and supported by leading documentary film distributor Dogwoof Films.
The Festival runs until Tuesday 4 October 2011.

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

Highlights of the West Midlands Human Rights Film Festival programme include:

a preview screening of the multi-award-winning ‘You Don't Like the
Truth - 4 Days Inside Guantánamo’, with guest speaker, Moazzam Begg,
Director of Cageprisoners, the organisation for human rights.

the World Premiere of ‘Defeat of the Champion', a powerful documentary
about Project Champion, a terrorism initiative which was challenged in
Birmingham. The Premiere will be attended by the film's Director, Ken
Fero.

‘Our Generation’, an eloquent award-winning Australian documentary
which reveals how poorly the Aborigines have been treated throughout
history. Director, Sinem Saban, will be at the screening to discuss
her film.

Birmingham International Film Society (BIFS) was founded in 2008 by
Allan Brookfield, Jerome Leavey, Tom Pointon and Max Simpson, four
local film enthusiasts experienced in working in Birmingham’s cinema
exhibition and film education sector. Their aim was to bring a variety
of foreign language and independent cinema releases to Birmingham
which would otherwise not be exhibited in the city and to promote
screenings in collaboration and through partnerships with diverse
local community organisations and groups.

Birmingham International Film Society’s work was recognised at last
year’s British Federation of Film Societies’ annual Awards ceremony,
taking away the coveted title of the Engholm Prize for Film Society of
the Year, as well as winning Best Film Programming, a distinction in
Marketing and Publicity, and a commendation in the Community Award.

Funded by Screen West Midlands (and more recently the BFI), regular
film screenings commenced in May 2008 at the Library Theatre, a
230-capacity venue in Birmingham city centre and part of Birmingham
Central Library.

For further information regarding the Festival and for details of the
full film festival programme, or possible interviews with guest
speakers, please call Jerome Leavey on 07866 237094 or contact BIFS at
